Initial Thoughts & Training Video

When I was asked to review InfluenceFinder I had no pre-conceived ideas about it. I had never heard of it, I didn’t know what it was and didn’t know what it did. My very first impression upon accessing the site was that it was a glorified, overpriced version of SEO-spyglass. So my thoughts started off quite negative towards InfluenceFinder. It didn’t help much when I watched the training video.

It appears that the creators hired an actor or a voice over professional to present their video. The narrative comes from a voice of a person who clearly knows nothing about what he is narrating, the expression in his voice is all wrong and extremely irritating, I found it incredibly hard to follow because he wasn’t speaking to me, he was reading a script. I had to watch the video several times and always drifted off and remained non the wiser.

So I just dived right in and messed around with the software like a child in a sandpit. I soon got to grips with it, or so I thought!

The Projects & Reports

The first thing you do once you log into the members section (apart from watch the awful training video) is create a new project. You are presented with 6 project types:

The next stage was to enter the URL’s of the competitors sites. I chose the top 3 sites in Google for a competitive keyword I am targeting for one of my new sites. You can choose to focus on the whole domain, a subdomain or a page.

Once you submit all the URL’s you want, the InfluenceFinder spider goes off and finds some or all (not sure) of the keywords or Anchor Text that those sites have targeted.

You can chose to include whichever keywords from the list you like as Branded Keywords or Non-Branded keywords. I still haven’t completely worked out what they intended by this. I initially assumed that branded keywords would be keywords that were only relevant to the company name or brand rather than a product service or generic search term. But, after using the software a few times I see more value in using the Brand / non-brand selection as Anchor Text Keyword / Non-Anchor Text Keyword or Targeted Keyword / Other Keywords.

Anyway, after selecting your branded and non-branded keywords you submit your project to the powerful Search Lab for indexing.

A while later, depending on the number of links, your report is complete. The report is basically a list of URLs that link to your competitors, similar to the SEO Service - spyglass or back link watch, however, there are many differences and advantages to this report. It comes with a raft of additional information about the link sites, information that you can manipulate, filter and organise to suit your strategy (more about that later).

Once you have organised your report, filtered and flagged all the bits that are important to you, you can export it to a csv file (my favourite bit), where you can manipulate you data to your hearts content. 

After truly studying my first report and realising the possibilities and potential of this tool, I wanted to try out some other reports, so I went for “Narrow Keyword Targets” The website suggests that this report helps you find influential sites and pages that are specifically about a very narrow keyword target.

Strangely the process was exactly the same as the last report, the data they requested was the same as the last report and oddly the report that appeared looked the same as the last report. Unless I am missing some strange back end wizardry, the process, functionality and results were identical for both reports, so I tested further.

The project type entitled ‘Virtical Media’ claimed to be rich in potential link targets your competitors do not have. So this must be different, I thought as all the other project I have picked so far only brought back links from the competitors URLs I enter at the beginning. This claims to help you find links they don’t have…must be different…..

The report was the same format again.

My conclusion to this disappointment is that the project types must be designed as guidance only, to give you direction and strategy, it doesn’t seem to change the process or the report. I may be wrong, but that was my initial conclusion. It’s not necessarily a bad thing, but the website format gives you the impression that you can run different report types delivery different data sets for different purposes. The only difference appears to be how you interpret then and how you define your intention at the start of the project.

The Data

Where this system appears to excel beyond other similar rivals is the detail and quality information you can gather on potential link prospects. It means that you can finely tune your link target list to ensure that the fewest links will deliver the most link juice, thus optimising your link building efforts.

I get a bit confused with this part of the report, I can only really understand the value of this if you only choose one brand keyword and one non brand keyword, otherwise you don’t know which keyword the report is referring to. I suppose the relevance of this depends on your strategy. It can also be useful for identifying which sites allow/include contextual keyword anchor text linking and which don’t.

I suppose all the elements of the report can be used for many purposes to define a link building strategy, that is the joy of its flexibility. It makes me want to test, test, test, to see which methods produce the best results.

You can batch your link building work to make it easier and quicker to deploy. For example you can pick out all the Blog sites with a heartbeat. This means you can build blog comment links and be fairly confident that they will actually be moderated. Or you could find sites with high authority AND high achievability index to get powerful links quickly.

The Results
